Where to Go in Mauritius

Mauritius is the joyous joy of the Indian Ocean off Africa's south-east coast, which punches far over its weight. While sunny skies, sandy beaches, and the warm Indian Ocean are standard on a Mauritian vacation, this diverse Island can be said to have something that will suit everyone whether you want a vibrant resort town with plenty of nightlife or a quiet nook for walking or birding.

The easiest way of choosing Mauritius is to split the island into four and match the best stretch of the coast and best places to visit with your interests and expectations. The north and west beaches are generally busier with more amenities and sightseeing after a spectacular holiday while the southern beaches in the east and south are more relaxed and have nothing to do' for a holiday.

Naturally, Mauritius is small enough for you to hire a car for the day and drive to a different beach or see a particular landmark or tourist attraction. The coastal roads are a great motorway, and there are a vast array of beaches and many interesting places, such as the welcoming towns in the green mountains and the beautiful gardens of the island.

If you want to go shopping and dining Grand Bay, North Coast
There is a lively fuel in the North of Mauritius: the island's only resort town - Grand Baie is home to interesting shops, a fantastic selection of water sports. Though Grand Bay has developed from a sleepy fishing village into a prosperous tourist destination, its friendly small town and the fine collection of hotels, restaurants, and bars that border the beautiful horse-riding bay still retain its friendly feeling. The capital of Port Louis is only 25 kilometers away and is a great place to visit during a classic holiday.

Grand Baie is a great place to browse clothes, jewelry, high-end memories, and high-end labels. Have a nap to catch the nightclubs after midnight after shopping all day long.

There are fishing boats on the Grand Baie waters and La Cuvette and Grand Baie's public beaches aren't an ideal place for swimming, but the peninsula of Pointe aux Canonniers is only a short drive away, which marks the beginning of a continuous chain of sandy sugar-white beaches along the west coast on the island.

The quieter Rivière du Rempart, with only a small number of resorts, is located on the eastern side of Grand Baie. The north-eastern coast of Mauritius honeymoon packages is becoming more and more popular with honeymooners, or those who are looking for a romantic break.

The North Coast is the portal to even smaller islets such as Flat and Round Islands, and more revelatory islets such as Gunners and Serpent Island.

The saying often says "West is best," and we are surely in agreement: the West Coast of Mauritius offers unspectacular beaches ranging from Trou aux Biches, the fine white sand in the far northeast, to the remote Le Morne peninsula on the SW tip. The most spectacular location of the entire island, Le Morne is located on the slopes of an impressive mountain, with its long sand stretch, reefs protected lagoon and a splendid golf course.

The clear sea and safe swimming on Trou aux Biches make this part of the coast especially popular with families, and the coral reef, which is only a short distance from the beach, is also ideal for snorkeling. Trou aux Biches may sometimes get busy, but if this is the case then just walk alongside Pointe aux Piments, a cool stretch of sand, although in places rocky.

The best-known beach on the western coast is Flic-en-Flac, south of Port Louis, and the longest one. The calm waters of the Flic-en Flac are protected by South-East Winds and perfect to swim, snorkel, kayak and dive, whereas the palm-lined shore offers a wide range of lodgings, shops, restaurants, and bars.

The Western Coast is shaded by casuarina trees (scarring like pine trees that rise from the white subtropical sand), and Mauritius is home to the largest Hindu temple and to rolling sugar cane areas, which have been carefully decorated.
